Yadong Guan, pipa
Bruno Roussel, guitar
Christophe Lobel, cello
Hailing from Beijing, Yadong Guan is a true musical ambassador who brilliantly masters the pipa, a traditional Chinese instrument that is over 2,000 years old. Handling the metal and nylon stringed instrument with impressive virtuosity, Guan uncovers one of her country’s hidden treasures, offering audiences a truly exotic experience. Many years of training and practice are necessary to master the pipa; an instrument which shares some of the guitar’s playing techniques. Those who have been privileged to watch Yadong perform have been enraptured by her profound artistic sensitivity and by the sounds of the pipa, which range from delicate and gentle to brisk and powerful.
Guitarist Bruno Rousell has performed as soloist and in chamber music ensembles throughout North America. Completing his master’s degree in 2010 at the Yale School of Music, he has since founded l’Académie de Guitare de l’Outaouais where he teaches. In addition Bruno is a member of the internationally renowned Canadian Guitar Quartet.
“Our ears were seduced by truly mesmerizing sounds”
– Journal des Citoyens, Prévost
Cellist Christophe Lobel performs with the Quebec Symphony Orchestra, with the Chamber Symphony and in numerous chamber ensembles. Aside from his performance activities, Christophe is presently director of the Capital Music Competition, co-director of Musical Centre in Quebec city and coordinator at the Quebec International of Sacred Music.
FRÉQUENCE PÉKINOISE
Fréquence pékinoise: an engaging “East-meets West” concert and an exciting encounter with the Chinese pipa. This concert includes traditional Chinese and Irish music, modern classical works, and selections from the Quebec song repertoire… without a doubt; Fréquence pékinoise promises an intensely moving musical experience!
Though the three performers offer sophisticated renditions of works by Debussy, Vivaldi and de Falla, the real highlight for the audience is to discover the pipa, one of the most ancient traditional instruments from China (over 2,000 years old!) which is still in use. Virtuoso Yadong Guan delivers a magnificent solo on the instrument, accompanied by explanations which provide insight into the pipa’s many subtleties.
Aside from the exotic instrumental aspect of Fréquence pékinoise, the audience will be deeply moved by Yadong Guan’s soothing singing voice.
“More sensitive than a harp, more twang than a guitar and at least as soothing as a cello … It’s beautiful.”
– Lisa Talesnick – Vernon Morning Star
Don’t miss this enchanting musical encounter of rare beauty and musical intensity!
