As Duo Cordelia, violinist Vanessa Marcoux and pianist Marie-Christine Poirier invite you into an unexpected musical landscape, where classical compositions mingle with fresh repertoire, playful improvisation, and unconventional technique.
Both graduates of the Université de Montréal and individually recognized as talented musicians, the two have been curating captivating performances together for almost a decade. Their 2024 album “Cendres” was honoured with an Opus Award for Album of the Year in the ancient, classical, romantic, modern and postmodern category.

Sous le nom de Duo Cordielia, la violoniste Vanessa Marcoux et la pianiste Marie-Christine Poirier vous invitent dans un paysage musical inattendu, où les compositions classiques se mêlent à un répertoire novateur, à des improvisations enjouées et à des techniques non conventionnelles.
Toutes deux diplômées de l’Université de Montréal et reconnues individuellement comme des musiciennes de talent, elles créent ensemble des représentations captivantes depuis près d’une décennie. Leur album Cendres, sorti en 2024, a été récompensé par le Prix Opus de l’Album de l’année, dans la catégorie Impulsions anciennes, classiques, romantiques, modernes, postmodernes.

BIOGRAPHY
With concerts of “stunning virtuosity and spectacular originality” [King’s Theatre, Annapolis Royal], pianist Marie-Christine Poirier and violinist Vanessa Marcoux are making a name for themselves across Canada as Duo Cordelia.
Their performance pushes the boundaries of piano and violin, exploring new aspects of the expressive range of these instruments. Duo Cordelia’s programming includes works by Shostakovitch, Piazzola, Fauré, Aguirre, Shedrine as well as traditional songs, new compositions and arrangements, and improvisations. The name Duo Cordelia is a small wordplay on “cordes”, which means “strings” in French. It also references the character of Cordelia in King Lear, an embodiment of the values of authenticity, courage and love.
Both Vanessa and Marie-Christine hold master’s degrees from the Université de Montréal and have performed internationally. Marie-Christine also appears regularly with the Opus Award-nominated Duo Fortin-Poirier, while Vanessa is increasingly recognized as a classical and contemporary composer for concert and film.

Avec des concerts d’une “virtuosité époustouflante et d’une originalité spectaculaire” [King’s Theatre, Annapolis Royal], la pianiste Marie-Christine Poirier et la violoniste Vanessa Marcoux se font un nom partout au Canada en tant que Duo Cordelia.
Leur performance repousse les limites du piano et du violon, explorant de nouveaux aspects dans la gamme expressive de ces instruments. Le répertoire de Duo Cordelia comprend des oeuvres de Chostakovitch, Piazzolla, Fauré, Aguirre, Chtchedrine, ainsi que des pièces traditionnelles, des compositions et arrangements inédits, et des improvisations. Le nom Duo Cordelia est un jeu de mot sur “cordes” et fait également référence au personnage de Cordelia dans Le Roi Lear, incarnation des valeurs d’authenticité, de courage et d’amour.
Vanessa et Marie-Christine sont toutes deux titulaires d’une maîtrise de l’Université de Montréal et se sont produites à l’échelle internationale. Marie-Christine joue également régulièrement au sein du Duo Fortin-Poirier, nommé aux Prix Opus, tandis que Vanessa est de plus en plus reconnue en tant que compositrice de musique classique et contemporaine pour la scène et le cinéma.

VANESSA MARCOUX
Throughout Vanessa Marcoux’s career as a violinist and composer, she has received numerous awards, including the Opus Prize for Duo Cordelia’s album “Cendres.” Vanessa has appeared with ensembles such as the McGill Chamber Orchestra (2014) and the Orchestre Métropolitain (2016). Her improvisational skills have also led to collaborations with many renowned artists and Juno-nominated ensembles.
Vanessa has performed worldwide, including locations in North America, Europe, Asia and Africa as well as across Canada with Marie-Christine. She holds a master’s degree from the Université de Montréal.
Vanessa performs regularly as a soloist and a chamber musician in an array of musical activities ranging from classical and contemporary music to world music, jazz and improvisation.
Tout au long de sa carrière de violoniste et de compositrice, Vanessa Marcoux a reçu de nombreux prix, dont le Prix Opus pour l’album Cendres du Duo Cordelia. Vanessa s’est produite avec des ensembles tels que l’Orchestre de chambre McGill (actuel Orchestre classique de Montréal – 2014) et l’Orchestre Métropolitain (2016). Ses talents d’improvisatrice l’ont également menée à collaborer avec de nombreux artistes de renom et des ensembles nommés aux prix Juno.
Vanessa s’est produite dans le monde entier, notamment en Amérique du Nord, en Europe, en Asie et en Afrique, ainsi qu’à travers le Canada avec Marie-Christine. Elle est titulaire d’une maîtrise de l’Université de Montréal.
Vanessa joue régulièrement à titre de soliste et chambriste dans un large éventail d’activités musicales, allant de la musique classique et contemporaine aux musiques du monde, en passant par le jazz et l’improvisation.
MARIE-CHRISTINE POIRIER
Since 2016, Marie Christine has been half of Duo Cordelia, performing across Canada with violinist and composer Vanessa Marcoux. Their first album was released in February 2024. She is also recognized for her work with Amélie Fortin in the Duo Fortin-Poirier, a piano pairing which has won awards and recognition both nationally and internationally. Marie Christine completed a master’s degree at the Université de Montréal.
Marie-Christine shares her passion for music through teaching, and has performed with different musical groups in Canada, Mexico, USA, Europe and Japan.
Depuis 2016, Marie-Christine fait partie du Duo Cordelia, avec lequel elle se produit partout au Canada, aux côtés de la violoniste et compositrice Vanessa Marcoux. Leur premier album est sorti en février 2024. Elle est également reconnue pour son travail avec Amélie Fortin au sein du Duo Fortin-Poirier, un duo de piano qui a remporté des prix et acquis une renommée tant au niveau national qu’international. Marie-Christine a obtenu une maîtrise à l’Université de Montréal.
Marie-Christine partage sa passion pour la musique à travers l’enseignement et a joué avec différents groupes musicaux au Canada, au Mexique, aux Etats-Unis, en Europe et au Japon.
