Get ready for a kaleidoscopic journey, as Duo Chromatika spins the colours of swing, jazz, and classical in ever-shifting patterns of exuberant expression.
Partners in both music and life, Julia Mirzoev and Russell Iceberg infuse their music with effervescent energy. Julia trained in violin at Yale, McGill and the University of Toronto, and is listed among CBC’s “Top 30 Classical Musicians Under 30.” Russell, lauded for his “lyricism, grand virtuosity … a real master of art” by Journal de Citoyens, Prévos, is a prize-winning, multi-instrumental artist, composer, and graduate of McGill University’s Schulich School of Music.
Prairie Debut is pleased to present Duo Chromatika as the third ensemble to be featured in “Road Trip! A Pan-Canadian Tour” in collaboration with Debut Atlantic and JM Canada.

JULIA MIRZOEV
Violinist Julia Mirzoev is known for her warm tone, grace, and fierce attack (California Music Center). A native of Toronto, she has been featured on CBC’s “Top 30 Classical Musicians Under 30.”
Julia has earned major distinctions, including prizes for commissioned works at both the Michael Hill and Irving M. Klein International Competitions, top awards at the Orchestre Symphonique de Montréal Competition, the Canadian Music Competition, and first prizes at the Crescendo International and Cremona Music Festival competitions. She has appeared as soloist with the Toronto Symphony Orchestra, Brampton Rose Orchestra, Scarborough Philharmonic, Sinfonia Toronto, Orchestra Toronto, and the Montréal Bach Festival Orchestra.
An avid chamber musician, Julia has performed with the New Orford String Quartet, Roger Tapping, Anthony Marwood, Colin Carr, Barry Shiffman, Violaine Melançon, Elizabeth Dolin, Mark Fewer, and members of the Doric and Danish String Quartets.
A graduate of Yale University, McGill University, the University of Toronto, and the Rebanks Family Fellowship at the Glenn Gould School, Julia comes from a family of music pedagogues. She coaches at the Royal Conservatory’s Taylor Academy and for l’Orchestre des Jeunes du Mont-Royal. Julia performs on a Gennaro Gagliano violin on loan from the Canada Council for the Arts. Her mentors include Jonathan Crow, Andrew Wan, Barry Shiffman, Ani Kavafian, and Jacob Lakirovich.
Recent highlights include performances with the Montréal Chamber Music Festival, Amici Ensemble, the Art of Time Ensemble, the Happenstancers, Concerts aux Îles du Bic, Pro Musica Montréal, the Syrinx Series, Ottawa Chamberfest, Stratford Summer Music, the Canadian Chamber Orchestra, and the Banff Centre’s String Quartet Festival. Upcoming engagements include appearances with the Lakeshore series, Sylva Camerata, the Happenstancers, recitals with Pro Musica, Festival International du Bach, and solo performances with Sinfonia Toronto and the Newfoundland symphony orchestra.
RUSSELL ICEBERG
Russell has won multiple awards, including grand prizes at the Golden Violin Competition, the Peter Mendell award, top prizes at the Allentown Symphony Orchestra’s Schadt String Competition including the audience award, and top prizes at Prix d’Éurope.
A graduate of McGill University’s Schulich School of Music, Russell studied with Orchestre Symphonique de Montréal Concertmaster Andrew Wan. Other significant teachers include Phyllis Freeman, Blair Milton, Naoko Tanaka, Scott Yoo, Robin Scott and Ian Swensen. Russell’s solo engagements have included performances with the Maryland Symphony Orchestra, the Northwestern University Alumni Symphony, the Colorado College Summer Music Festival Orchestra, L’orchestre I Medici de McGill, and L’Orchestre des Jeunes de Mont Royal.
A devoted chamber musician, Russell has advanced to live rounds and semi-finals of several prestigious competitions including the Young Concert Artists Competition, Wigmore Hall International String Quartet Competition, Premio Paolo Borciani, Trondheim, Chesapeake, and WDAV as part of the Iceberg, Persée and Myriade String Quartets. Notable collaborations include performances with members of the Ying and New Orford String Quartets, Charles-Richard Hamelin, Kyoko Hashimoto, and Yegor Dyachkov.
Russell has been a natural performer and improvisor from an early age, and is a versatile multi-instrumentalist and composer whose work bridges classical, jazz, folk, and rock traditions. Equally at home on violin, guitar, mandolin, flute, and keyboards, he brings a unique voice to both original compositions and collaborative projects. His career spans solo performances, orchestral collaborations, studio sessions, and appearances at renowned venues from the United States, Canada, and Europe.
