When cultures meet in the music of the Masmoudi Quartette, the result is rather extraordinary. Jazz is infused with a rich interplay of Western, Middle Eastern, and African instrumentation to create a tapestry of sound that is familiar and unexpected at the same time.

Group leader Mohamed Masmoudi originally hails from Tunisia, and his music incorporates influences from a lifetime devoted to study, travel and performance. His works are known for a melodic richness and multifaceted texture. A sampling of the Masmoudi playbook is a stroll through moods and landscapes, from the sprightly “Labyrinthe” to the sultry “Moorish Tango” and the wistful, Parisian-inspired “Loin de Montparnesse.”

Masmoudi is joined by Guillame Martineau (piano), Gabriel Paquin-Buki (clarinet) and Rémi-Jean Leblanc (double bass)

Audiences will be intrigued by a mosaic of classical, jazz, and world music quite unlike any other.

From a young age, Mohamed Masmoudi has been fascinated by music in all its forms, imprinted by the rich history of his native Tunisia which has seen several civilizations evolve on its lands. Since then, he has dedicated his life to studying, exploring and performing a multitude of instruments, genres and musical styles from diverse cultures.

Oud player Mohamed Masmoudi has been musically trained in both eastern and western traditions, drawing inspiration from classical, jazz and music that blends different cultural influences. Masmoudi’s rich and diverse journey has emboldened his sound, with Alain Brunet from La Presse underscoring “his mastery of his musical heritage and that of modern music that he’s passionate about”.

In his projects as an artistic director and composer, Mohamed Masmoudi seeks to create a unifying music that values the heritage of cultures that have marked his life. This artistic approach is notably embodied in “Villes éternelles”, the first album of the Masmoudi Quartet, released in 2023.
